Blind Date With a Dog (and Puppy Love Photo Ops!)

Hosted by the Fayette County Animal Shelter

One of our absolute favorite Valentine’s happenings this year is all about unconditional love and wagging tails.

This Valentine’s Day, ditch the swiping and let us handle the matchmaking with Blind Date With a Dog. Participants will be matched with a shelter dog without seeing a bio or photo first. Your mystery pup will be waiting at the shelter, ready to steal your heart.

You’ll then take your canine date out on the town for a real doggy date, with ideas like:

• A pup cup stop
• A fun outing to PetSmart, Lowe’s, or Tractor Supply
• A stroll or playtime at the Fayetteville dog park
• Or a relaxed walk and cuddle session
• Stop by the Fayetteville Visitor Center for a Valentine’s Day photo backdrop for dog photos, plus treats for both pups and people.
• Bridge Brew Works and the Freefolk Brewery are also pup friendly

After your date, you’ll get to learn more about your pup’s personality and story and if you’ve fallen head over paws, you can take the next steps toward adoption.

Every date gives a shelter dog valuable enrichment, socialization, and a day filled with love. This event is perfect for singles, couples, families, and dog lovers of all kinds.

Valentine’s Day for the Dogs Photo op at the Fayetteville Visitor Center

Valentine’s Day for the Dogs is a perfect way to celebrate love with your furry friends and fellow animal lovers. 

Stop at the Visit Fayetteville WV Visitor Center with your dog between 10am and 4pm. We will have complimentary pup cups, sweet treats for humans, and a festive photo booth to capture the fun. 

Is your dog already well pampered or you don’t have a dog to enjoy the fun with? We are proudly partnered with the Fayette County Animal Shelter, supporting their Blind Date with a Dog event. Stop by the shelter and be matched with a dog that deserves some much-needed time away and treat them to a special Valentine’s Day to remember.

“Where art, nature, and people come together to inspire and be inspired” — Fayetteville Creates is doing exactly that, and it’s already making waves across our community.

Launched this month in the heart of the New River Gorge, right here in Fayetteville, West Virginia, Fayetteville Creates is a town-wide artist residency program unlike anything else in the state. This pioneering initiative positions Fayetteville not just as a gateway to outdoor adventure, but as a growing hub for creativity, culture, and community connection.

Artist residencies exist across the country, but Fayetteville Creates stands apart for one powerful reason: it is deeply rooted in community collaboration.

From a Single Residency to a Town-Wide Vision

Artist residencies are not new to Fayetteville. The New River Gorge Creative Residency has been rooted here for more than a decade, driven by the vision of Amy McLaughlin and Shawn Means of Lafayette Flats Boutique Vacation Rentals.

Amy explained that the inspiration was both practical and heartfelt. Before the National Park designation, winter in Fayetteville was — in her words — “dead as a doorknob.” At the same time, Lafayette Flats, a four-story vacation rental property, often sat empty in January. With a core mission of supporting artists, Amy and Shawn chose to see opportunity rather than loss.

They welcomed artists into the space, giving them room to work, time to be creative, and the chance to be inspired by Fayetteville’s natural beauty. Over time, it became clear that this model could grow into something bigger — something that didn’t just support artists, but could also strengthen the community itself.

“Shawn and I are proud to fold the New River Gorge Creative Residency — an artist residency we launched 12 years ago at Lafayette Flats — into Fayetteville Creates,” Amy shared.
“Thanks to the leadership of dedicated community volunteers and the generosity of other vacation rental owners, Fayetteville Creates expands our original vision by welcoming more visiting artists while deepening the impact on the local community through free classes and workshops. This evolution utilizes Fayetteville’s tourism assets during the quiet season to make creativity accessible to everyone.”

Building Fayetteville Creates

With support from a $10,000 “Ripple Grant” awarded by the West Virginia Creative Network, community members came together to shape the vision for Fayetteville Creates as a truly town-wide artist residency.

This vision took shape through a year-long planning process led by a dedicated committee of six community volunteers. From the start, it was essential that the program be just as beneficial to the local community as it is to visiting creatives and tourists. It was also important to the committee that they were not only selecting talented artists, but creatives who are community-minded and genuinely enjoy sharing their skills, stories, and creative process with others.

Two priorities guided decisions:

1. All programming would be free, ensuring accessibility for everyone in the community.
2. Local businesses would be paid for their services, from food and restaurants to musicians and gift baskets — keeping dollars circulating locally during one of the slowest months of the year.

Turning Vacation Rentals into Creative Spaces

In many small communities, short-term rentals are often viewed as a challenge. Fayetteville Creates intentionally flips that narrative.

Through this program, vacation rentals are transformed into inspiring creative spaces during the winter. Vacation homeowners have generously donated their properties — not for profit, but to invest in Fayetteville as a place to live, not just visit.

Amy shared that many local vacation homeowners jumped at the opportunity because they want Fayetteville to be better for residents as well as visitors. It doesn’t have to be an either-or.

This winter, seven creatives representing different artistic disciplines are staying in donated vacation rentals as they create, explore, and engage with the community.

Art That Lives in the Community

Fayetteville Creates isn’t about artists working behind closed doors. The focus is on connection — bringing art into our streets, shops, and gathering places.

Each creative resident will host a free workshop, class, or demonstration, creating opportunities for hands-on learning and shared experiences. In addition, every artist is paired with a local volunteer art guide, helping them connect more deeply with Fayetteville’s people, places, and culture.

As Amy noted,
“You throw a stick in Fayetteville and you’ll hit a guide — a raft guide or a climbing guide etc. — so why not art guides too?”

Community support has poured in from all directions. Eric from the Escape-A-Torium offered team-building experiences, Sarah Goodyear invited visiting artists to monthly art meet-ups, and Meredith Gregg opened her downtown art studio to a visiting creative. The response has been overwhelming — and incredibly heartening.

Casual Meet-Ups, Real Connections

When asked what excites her most about Fayetteville Creates, Amy didn’t hesitate: the weekly meet-ups.

These gatherings are intentionally casual — no agendas, no expectations. Community members are invited to show up, bring whatever they’re working on, and simply create together.

The goal is connection. Relationships. Shared creativity. A space where people can get to know one another and build something lasting.

January proved to be the perfect month. During Fayetteville’s slowest tourist season, residents can attend art events multiple times a week — from workshops to casual creative hangouts — turning winter into something vibrant and connected. “The off-season leveraging of vacation rentals to benefit both artists and the local community is sustainable tourism at its absolute finest.”

The New River Gorge itself was built on the backs of workers—from coal miners who risked their lives underground, to loggers who harvested the timber that rebuilt America, to the railroad crews who laid the tracks that carried it all out of these mountains. These industries demanded grueling hours, dangerous conditions, and little pay, but they also gave rise to some of the strongest traditions of solidarity and organizing in the nation.

Just down the road from Fayetteville, the Hawks Nest Tunnel Disaster of the 1930s became one of the darkest chapters in American labor history. Hundreds of men, many of them Black migrant workers, lost their lives from silicosis after drilling the Hawks Nest Tunnel without proper protection. In 1930 construction started on a 3-mile tunnel through Gauley Mountain. The Hawks Nest Tunnel diverts water from the New River to a hydroelectric power plant downstream. As the men drilled through the rock in the mountain thick white silica dust filled their lungs. Silicosis claimed the lives of at least” 764 workers ” (NPS.gov) and those numbers have risen years after completion of the project. Their suffering brought national attention to industrial safety standards, shaping workplace protections we benefit from today (National Park Service).

Even earlier, West Virginia was the battleground of the Mine Wars of the early 20th century. Coal miners across the southern coalfields fought for fair wages, the right to unionize, and safer conditions in an industry that controlled every aspect of their lives. The conflict came to a head at the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921, when thousands of miners marched—one of the largest labor uprisings in U.S. history. Though it ended in bloodshed, the Mine Wars fueled momentum that changed labor rights across the nation (West Virginia Encyclopedia).

Touching right here in Fayetteville, local resident John Propps shared his experience working at the H & S Plastic Factory off Laurel Creek Road in 1969. John started at the factory in February of that year, looking for work when there weren’t many jobs available in the area. At the time, he made about $1.60 an hour. John said most of the time he was too busy trying to keep up with the machine to get caught in all the union talk. He remembered a foreman showing him a trick—turn up the heat and the plastic would melt faster. But it was an art: one worker didn’t get it right, and the mistake meant parts had to be shipped back, broken down, melted again, and the whole process restarted.  He overheard workers who had transferred from Kinders Plastics in Chicago saying they were earning closer to $3 an hour. “They were cheating us,” the workers exclaimed.

When the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) came in, it was a big moment for Fayetteville. Workers voted to unionize and signed a two-year contract. But management was resistant. John recalled owner Shackleford warning that if workers ever tried to negotiate another deal with the union in the future, he would close the plant and move operations. When a new union meeting was held at the scout cabin in Oak Hill, Shackleford caught wind of it—and followed through on his threat, shutting the factory down.

This piece of Fayetteville’s history reflects the same struggles seen across the state: workers organizing for fair treatment and facing pushbacks yet leaving behind a legacy that helped shape labor rights today.

When we observe Labor Day in West Virginia, we honor these workers—their courage, their sacrifice, and the hard-earned victories that some of the labor rights we have today.

The national park emphasizes that everyone should wear a personal flotation device (PFD or life jacket) at all times while on the water. Most drownings in the New River occur with people who didn’t plan on being in the water, underscoring the unpredictability of water conditions and the importance of being prepared.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding & Kayaking

Experience the beauty of our area with a guided stand-up paddle board trip with Mountain Surf Paddle Sports. Their 2–4-hour tours allow you to explore hidden waterfalls accessible only by water. The Kanawha Falls trip is a must-do, where you can discover secret waterfalls hidden behind those visible from the road. They also offer tours of Summersville Lake. For a unique experience, try their sunset or moonlight tours.

Kayaking and Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) in the New River Gorge

While Fayetteville sits near the Lower New River Gorge, where class III–V rapids from Cunard to Fayette Station challenge even experienced paddlers, this stretch is not recommended for beginners—it’s better suited for a guided whitewater rafting trip.

For intermediate whitewater kayakers, the Upper New River from Hinton to Thurmond offers gentler class I–III rapids, but the river can still be unpredictable. If you’re renting a kayak or paddleboard, we recommend sticking to flatwater areas and lakes for a safer, more leisurely paddle.

Make a Splash: Where to Swim Near Fayetteville

When it comes to cooling off with a swim, Summersville Lake is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. Head to the public beach at Battle Run for easy lake access or explore areas like Salmon Run (be aware of boats launching in this area) or hike-in coves scattered along the shoreline. For a more rustic dip, Babcock State Park features a serene Creekside swimming hole just below the iconic Gristmill, and Lake Stephens, just outside of Beckley, offers a sandy beach and calm waters. Looking to pair your swim with a scenic hike? Glade Creek Trail rewards trekkers with a beautiful waterfall-fed swimming hole. The New River Gorge National Park also offers riverside swimming at Stone Cliff Beach, Army Camp, and the Grandview Sandbar—but take caution. The New River has a strong current, and conditions can change quickly. Life jackets are a must, and swimmers should always be mindful of water levels and currents before taking the plunge. We recommend the places like Summersville Lake over river swimming because of the current in the river.

Open from late May to September, ACE’s waterpark features 5 acres of inflatable toys, including climbing mountains, spinning balls, obstacle courses, a zipline, and waterslides, along with a splash pad. It’s a perfect spot for family fun and the closest adventure lake to Fayetteville.

On special occasions ACE offers movie nights on the lake like ” Jaws on the Lake” where you can float on the lake and enjoy a classic movie.

Pipestem State Park has a small Adventure Lake and splash pad.

Lake Stephens offers an Adventure Lake and splash pad.

Tubing

While Fayetteville is known for whitewater and not the place to inner tube, you can enjoy calmer tubing experiences at the southern end of the park. New River Outfitters offers inner tube rentals for leisurely floats on the New River and Greenbrier River in calmer sections of water. In the Lower new where Fayetteville is located, we the river is too dangerous for tubing as we have rapids and a stronger current.

Surrounding Lake Attractions

Stay a little longer and plan to spend time exploring around our region. Fayetteville makes a great home base while you venture a little further around the National Park and surrounding region. Venture to places like Bluestone Lake where you can rent kayaks, pontoons and canoe at the Blue Stone Lake Marina. Pipestem Resort is home to a lake that houses inflatables and offers stand up paddle board rentals and a splash pad. Lake Stephens is just outside of Beckly offering an aqua park with inflatables, splash pad, kayak and stand- up paddle board rentals. One of our favorite seasonal attractions is Plum Orchard Lake. (Caution: The road to Plum Orchard is narrow and rough and it is difficult to pass cars in spots.) Visitors will need to rent and transport kayaks/ paddle boards and make the trek to the lake. Enjoy when the lilies bloom on Plum Orchard Lake making it serene destination of flat-water exploration. Pontoon rentals are also available at Summersville Lake at the Summersville Lake Marina.
