  Catch the action on the Upper Gauley as paddlers go head-to-head in the wildest river competition of the season. Known as the “Beast of the East,” this is a spectacle for both racers and spectators.

• The National Parks African American Heritage Trail, which tells the story of Black coal miners, community leaders, and families who helped build this region.

Woodson, widely known as the “Father of Black History Month.” Carter spent part of his early life working in the coalfields of the New River Gorge, where he listened to stories from miners. His legacy as a historian, author, and advocate for preserving Black stories is foundational to how we remember history today.
• The historic Black church in nearby Thurmond, where faith and community provided strength and sanctuary for generations.
• Thomas L. Sweeney, the town’s first Black lawyer. Sweeney broke barriers in the legal system and left a lasting impact through his dedication to justice and civil rights.

• A short drive from Fayetteville, Camp Washington Carver opened in 1942 as the first 4-H camp in the nation for African American youth. Named after Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, it was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and remains a powerful symbol of heritage, education, and resilience.
• Second Baptist Church, a historic black church has been preserved and transformed into The Love Hope Center for the Arts — a gallery and community hub that continues to amplify voices and creativity across all backgrounds.
• The Pierce Cemetery Foundation, in partnership with the National Coal Heritage Area and Preserve WV AmeriCorps, is actively working to preserve Fayetteville’s largest African American burial ground, the Peirce Cemetary. Their efforts honor the lives and legacies of those buried there, many of whom were integral to the history of the New River Gorge region.

Top Spring Adventures in Fayetteville & the New River Gorge (2026 Guide)

As winter fades and the mountains begin to bloom, spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Fayetteville and the New River Gorge. Wildflowers line the trails, waterfalls are flowing at their strongest, and downtown Fayetteville comes alive with lot of events. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just looking for a day trip, here are some of the top spring adventures in Fayetteville and the New River Gorge.

1. Best Spring Hikes: Southside Trail & Rend Trail (Thurmond)

Spring is one of the best times to hit the trails in the New River Gorge before the summer heat and crowds arrive.

Southside Trail is an easy riverside trail that follows the New River through old coal mining towns like Brooklyn, Red Ash, and Rush Run. In the spring, the trail is lined with wildflowers and bright green foliage, making it a peaceful and scenic walk or bike ride.

The Southside Trail is an easy, 7-mile (out- and- back) riverside path that provides stunning views of the New River. This trail winds through several abandoned mining towns, including Brooklyn, Red Ash, and Rush Run, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich history.  Please be aware that the road leading into Cunard is currently under construction. Expect delays when traveling this route as some sections are one lane. Drive past the Cunard River access lots to the Brooklyn campground parking and you will see the Southside trailhead. In the spring you can see an abundance of blooms along this trial.

Rend Trail (Thurmond Side) is a shorter, easy rail trail that crosses historic railroad trestles and follows Dunloup Creek toward the New River. This trail is known for spring wildflowers and beautiful creek views.

The Rend Trail Thurmond section is an easy 1.96 mile out and back rail trail with lots of spring wildflowers on display. This easy-grade trail is popular among hikers and mountain bikers of all levels. It crosses several railroad trestles and offers scenic views of Dunloup Creek, the New River, and the historic town of Thurmond.

2. Chase Spring Waterfalls

Spring rains make this the best season for waterfalls in Southern West Virginia. Some must-see waterfalls near Fayetteville include:

• Mill Creek Falls at Hawks Nest State Park
• Cathedral Falls in Gauley Bridge
• Kanawha Falls near Glen Ferris
• Sandstone Falls in the New River Gorge National Park near Hinton
• Glade Creek Falls at Babcock State Park

Ever wonder why we celebrate Black History Month in February? It all traces back to Carter G. Woodson, a scholar, educator, and historian who is widely known as the “Father of Black History.” But did you know that before he made history, Woodson lived and worked right here in Fayette County, West Virginia?

From Coal Mines to Classrooms: Woodson’s Fayette County Story

Born in 1875 to formerly enslaved parents in Virginia, Carter G. Woodson and his family moved to West Virginia, like many African Americans of that time, seeking better opportunities in the booming railroad and coal mining industries of the New River Gorge. His family settled on a farm, where he helped his father in the fields.

Determined to get an education, Woodson worked in several coal mines across the region, including those in Kaymoor and Nuttallburg, to save money for school. While working alongside Black miners, he heard countless stories of their struggles, resilience, and contributions—stories that were often left out of history books. These experiences fueled his passion for education and his mission to ensure African American history was properly recorded and celebrated.

A Passion for Education

After six years in the mines, Woodson had saved enough money to enroll in Douglass High School in Huntington, West Virginia—one of the few Black high schools in the state. He graduated in just two years and returned to Fayette County to teach at a school in Winona, which had been founded by Black miners to educate their children. The school was just five miles from the very mines where Woodson once worked.

Woodson’s academic journey took him far beyond West Virginia. He earned a bachelor’s degree in literature from Berea College in Kentucky in 1903 and later traveled the world as both a teacher and student. In 1912, he became the second African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University, making history as the first person of enslaved parents to achieve this academic milestone.

The Birth of Black History Month

Recognizing the lack of representation of African Americans in history books, Woodson took action. In 1915, he founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, an organization dedicated to documenting Black history.

In 1926, he launched Negro History Week, choosing the second week of February to honor the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. This observance gained momentum and eventually expanded into what we now recognize as Black History Month.

A Legacy That Lives On

Carter G. Woodson passed away in 1950, but his impact continues to shape how we learn about and celebrate African American history. His dedication to education, his time spent in Fayette County, and his work in the New River Gorge played a critical role in inspiring his life’s mission.

Today, the National Park Service honors his legacy at the Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., and his influence can still be felt in Fayette County, where the coal miners’ stories he once listened to remain an essential part of our region’s rich history.

As we celebrate Black History Month, let’s remember that it all started with a man who believed that history should tell the full story of all people—not just a select few.
