Most drownings in the New River occur with people who didn’t plan on being in the water, underscoring the unpredictability of water conditions and the importance of being prepared.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding & Kayaking

Experience the beauty of our area with a guided stand-up paddle board trip with Mountain Surf Paddle Sports. Their 2–4-hour tours allow you to explore hidden waterfalls accessible only by water. The Kanawha Falls trip is a must-do, where you can discover secret waterfalls hidden behind those visible from the road. They also offer tours of Summersville Lake. Kayaking and Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) in the New River Gorge

While Fayetteville sits near the Lower New River Gorge, where class III–V rapids from Cunard to Fayette Station challenge even experienced paddlers, this stretch is not recommended for beginners—it’s better suited for a guided whitewater rafting trip.

For intermediate whitewater kayakers, the Upper New River from Hinton to Thurmond offers gentler class I–III rapids, but the river can still be unpredictable. If you’re renting a kayak or paddleboard, we recommend sticking to flatwater areas and lakes for a safer, more leisurely paddle.

Make a Splash: Where to Swim Near Fayetteville

When it comes to cooling off with a swim, Summersville Lake is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. Head to the public beach at Battle Run for easy lake access or explore areas like Salmon Run (be aware of boats launching in this area) or hike-in coves scattered along the shoreline. For a more rustic dip, Babcock State Park features a serene Creekside swimming hole just below the iconic Gristmill, and Lake Stephens, just outside of Beckley, offers a sandy beach and calm waters. Looking to pair your swim with a scenic hike? Glade Creek Trail rewards trekkers with a beautiful waterfall-fed swimming hole. The New River Gorge National Park also offers riverside swimming at Stone Cliff Beach, Army Camp, and the Grandview Sandbar—but take caution. The New River has a strong current, and conditions can change quickly. Life jackets are a must, and swimmers should always be mindful of water levels and currents before taking the plunge. We recommend the places like Summersville Lake over river swimming because of the current in the river.

Open from late May to September, ACE’s waterpark features 5 acres of inflatable toys, including climbing mountains, spinning balls, obstacle courses, a zipline, and waterslides, along with a splash pad. It’s a perfect spot for family fun and the closest adventure lake to Fayetteville.

On special occasions ACE offers movie nights on the lake like ” Jaws on the Lake” where you can float on the lake and enjoy a classic movie.

Pipestem State Park has a small Adventure Lake and splash pad.

Tubing

While Fayetteville is known for whitewater and not the place to inner tube, you can enjoy calmer tubing experiences at the southern end of the park. New River Outfitters offers inner tube rentals for leisurely floats on the New River and Greenbrier River in calmer sections of water. In the Lower new where Fayetteville is located, we the river is too dangerous for tubing as we have rapids and a stronger current.

Lake Stephens is just outside of Beckly offering an aqua park with inflatables, splash pad, kayak and stand- up paddle board rentals. One of our favorite seasonal attractions is Plum Orchard Lake. (Caution: The road to Plum Orchard is narrow and rough and it is difficult to pass cars in spots.) Visitors will need to rent and transport kayaks/ paddle boards and make the trek to the lake. Enjoy when the lilies bloom on Plum Orchard Lake making it serene destination of flat-water exploration. Pontoon rentals are also available at Summersville Lake at the Summersville Lake Marina.

1. Best Spring Hikes: Southside Trail & Rend Trail (Thurmond)

Southside Trail is an easy riverside trail that follows the New River through old coal mining towns like Brooklyn, Red Ash, and Rush Run. In the spring, the trail is lined with wildflowers and bright green foliage, making it a peaceful and scenic walk or bike ride.

The Southside Trail is an easy, 7-mile (out- and- back) riverside path that provides stunning views of the New River. This trail winds through several abandoned mining towns, including Brooklyn, Red Ash, and Rush Run, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich history.  Please be aware that the road leading into Cunard is currently under construction. Expect delays when traveling this route as some sections are one lane. Drive past the Cunard River access lots to the Brooklyn campground parking and you will see the Southside trailhead. In the spring you can see an abundance of blooms along this trial.

Rend Trail (Thurmond Side) is a shorter, easy rail trail that crosses historic railroad trestles and follows Dunloup Creek toward the New River. This trail is known for spring wildflowers and beautiful creek views.

The Rend Trail Thurmond section is an easy 1.96 mile out and back rail trail with lots of spring wildflowers on display. This easy-grade trail is popular among hikers and mountain bikers of all levels. It crosses several railroad trestles and offers scenic views of Dunloup Creek, the New River, and the historic town of Thurmond.

2. Chase Spring Waterfalls

Spring rains make this the best season for waterfalls in Southern West Virginia. Some must-see waterfalls near Fayetteville include:

• Mill Creek Falls at Hawks Nest State Park

Bridge Day is West Virginia’s largest single-day festival and one of the world’s most thrilling extreme sports events! Find Your Lodging Early

To fully immerse yourself in the festivities, book your lodging in Fayetteville as soon as possible. Hotels, vacation rentals, and campgrounds fill up quickly around Bridge Day, so don’t wait! If you’re staying in town, take advantage of the Bridge Day shuttle for convenient transportation to the event. Shuttle stops are located at:

• Fayette County Courthouse (in front of the Southside Junction Tap House off Maple Ave.)
• Fayetteville PK-8 School (W. Maple Avenue)

What to Wear

Prepare for the variable fall weather by dressing in layers. Mornings can be cool and damp, but temperatures may rise throughout the day. Comfortable shoes are a must, as you’ll be walking and standing for most of the day. Don’t forget to check the official Bridge Day page for any updates on restricted items, but as a reminder, no bags or backpacks are allowed on the bridge. Clear backpacks and handbags are permitted, and you can purchase these from the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce or at select shuttle stops (cash only).

Taste of Bridge Day

Kick off the celebration early at the Taste of Bridge Day on Friday evening, October 18, 2024. Hosted at Adventures on the Gorge, this family-friendly event features a culinary showcase by local restaurants and caterers, with live music and artisan vendors. Tickets are limited, so be sure to grab yours in advance for a delicious prelude to the big day! Proceeds benefit the Canyon Rim Rotary Club and go toward community service projects.

Bridge Day 2024 Event Schedule

Stay up to date with all the happenings by following this year’s official schedule:

• 5:30 AM: Vendors arrive in staging lots
• 7:00 AM: U.S. Route 19 closes to traffic, and detours begin
• 8:15 AM: Buses begin transporting 5k racers to starting line
• 8:30 AM: Shuttle service begins from all designated lots
• 8:45 AM: Active Southern West Virginia Bridge Day 5K begins
• 9:00 AM: BASE jumping, rappelling, and Into the Gorge bus rides start (pre-sold tickets only)
• 1:30 PM Into the Gorge bus rides end
• 3:00 PM: Bridge Day festivities end
• 3:00 PM: Bridge Day Chili Cook-off begins in downtown Fayetteville
• 5:00 PM: U.S. Route 19 re-opens, and detours end
• 6:00 PM: Chili Cook-off ends

Don’t Miss the Active Southern West Virginia Bridge Day 5K Run

For runners, this is the ultimate chance to experience the New River Gorge Bridge like never before! The Active Southern West Virginia Bridge Day 5K offers breathtaking views as participants race across the bridge and finish in downtown Fayetteville. Limited to600 runners, spots fill up fast, so sign up early! This race supports Active Southern West Virginia’s Kids Run Clubs and community health programs.

Shuttle Bus Locations

With the bike valet service no longer available, taking advantage of the shuttle bus service is your best option for getting to and from Bridge Day smoothly. Shuttle stops are conveniently located at the following spots:

  • Fayette County Courthouse
• North Fayetteville Shuttle Stops:

The shuttle service runs regularly throughout the day, making it the easiest way to access the event without the hassle of parking. Make sure you bring your $5 cash (per person) to access the shuttles.

Experience the Bridge Day Chili Cook-off

After the adrenaline rush of Bridge Day, unwind at the Bridge Day Chili Cook-off in downtown Fayetteville starting at 3:00 PM. Enjoy a variety of chili dishes from local chefs and vote for your favorite while soaking in live music from the Longpoint String Band and the relaxed atmosphere of Fayetteville’s charming downtown. It’s the perfect way to wrap up your Bridge Day adventure!

Safety

Water safety is paramount when enjoying the various activities offered by the New River. The national park emphasizes that everyone should wear a personal flotation device (PFD or life jacket) at all times while on the water. Most drownings in the New River occur with people who didn’t plan on being in the water, underscoring the unpredictability of water conditions and the importance of being prepared.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Experience the beauty of our area with a guided stand-up paddle board trip with Mountain Surf Paddle Sports. Their 2–4-hour tours allow you to explore hidden waterfalls accessible only by water. The Kanawha Falls trip is a must-do, where you can discover secret waterfalls hidden behind those visible from the road. They also offer tours of Summersville Lake and the New River, where you can enjoy the sights of the New River Gorge Bridge. For a unique experience, try their sunset or moonlight tours. Paddle board rentals are available from Mountain Surf Paddle Sports, ACE Adventure Gear Shop in Fayetteville, Lake Side Outfitters, and Summersville Lake and Marina.

Whitewater Rafting

Fayetteville is renowned for its world-class whitewater rafting, thanks to its proximity to both the New River and Gauley River. Rafting the national park’s rivers offers unparalleled views and thrilling experiences.

New River

• Upper New River: Perfect for families and those seeking a mellower ride, the Upper New River offers class I-III rapids. Suitable for ages 6 and up, it provides a calmer float with a touch of excitement.
• Lower New River: The most popular section, the Lower New River, features incredible views of the gorge and rapids ranging from class I to IV. Suitable for ages 12 and up, it’s a favorite for adventure seekers.

Gauley River

• Upper Gauley: Known worldwide for its intense rapids, the Upper Gauley is fed by the Summersville Dam and boasts five class V rapids. Experience is recommended, and it’s suitable for ages 15 and up.
• Lower Gauley: Tamer than the Upper Gauley, the Lower Gauley offers scenic backcountry views and is one of the most remote sections. Suitable for ages 12 and up.

New River Dries

• This unique section of the river, downstream from the New River Gorge Bridge and Hawks Nest Lake, can be rafted on select days when water is released from the dam.

Water levels can vary on both rivers, influencing your trip. Options range from 4-8 hours with overnight stays available. We recommend a full-day trip to fully immerse yourself in the experience.

For a soft scenic adventure, try the New River Jet Boat. Suitable for all ages, this scenic tour takes passengers from Hawks Nest Lake back up the New River, offering incredible views of the New River Gorge Bridge.

ACE Wonderland Water Park

Open from late May to September, ACE’s waterpark features 5 acres of inflatable toys, including climbing mountains, spinning balls, obstacle courses, a zipline, and waterslides, along with a splash pad. It’s a perfect spot for family fun.

Tubing

While Fayetteville is known for whitewater and not the place to inner tube, you can enjoy calmer tubing experiences at the southern end of the park. New River Outfitters offers inner tube rentals for leisurely floats on the New River and Greenbrier River.

Kayaking/Canoeing/Paddle Boats

• Babcock State Park: Babcock State Park offers seasonal kayak, paddle boat, and canoe rentals at Boley Lake. It’s a small, serene lake ideal for exploring, especially when the rhododendrons are in bloom. This is one of the most affordable rental spots in the area.
• Summersville Lake: Rent kayaks from Lakeside Outfitters, Summersville Lake Marina, and Summersville Lake Retreat and Lighthouse to explore one of West Virginia’s most beautiful lakes. The flat water around the lake is perfect for a peaceful paddle.

Swimming Just a 20-minute drive north of Fayetteville off Route 19, Summersville Lake is a popular swimming spot. Battle Run beach is a favorite, as is the swimming hole along the Glade Creek trail, complete with a waterfall.

Surrounding Lake Attractions

Stay a little longer and plan to spend time exploring around our region. Fayetteville makes a great home base while you venture a little further around the National Park and surrounding region. Venture to places like Bluestone Lake where you can rent kayaks, pontoons and canoe at the Blue Stone Lake Marina. Pipestem Resort is home to a lake that houses inflatables and offers stand up paddle board rentals and a splash pad. Lake Stephens is just outside of Beckly offering an aqua park with inflatables, splash pad, kayak and stand- up paddle board rentals. One of our favorite seasonal attractions is Plum Orchard Lake. (Caution: The road to Plum Orchard is narrow and rough and it is difficult to pass cars in spots.) Visitors will need to rent and transport kayaks/ paddle boards and make the trek to the lake. Enjoy when the lilies bloom on Plum Orchard Lake making it serene destination of flat-water exploration. Pontoon rentals are also available at Summersville Lake at the Summersville Lake Marina.

Earth Day 2.0

Generation New River Gorge Presents Earth Day 2.0. This festival celebrates the springtime renewal and revitalization in West Virginia’s mountains. You will be able to visit various arts, crafts, retail, and artisan food, vendors. Feast your eyes on beautiful paintings and pottery, locally-made soaps, jewelry, and much more! The day kicks off with community yoga on the Court House lawn, followed by educational activities promoting environmental protection, local businesses, kids games, and interactive booths, and ending with local live music in downtown! The farmer’s market is open from 8:30 am-12:30 pm selling fresh, locally grown treats including baked goods, coffee, spices, and herbal remedies.

Gritty Chix Mud Run  is coming back to ACE Adventure Resort June 19, 2021! At ACE, we are ready to jump back into all that mud! Gritty Chix was voted the #1 Mud Run/Adventure Race in the Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic last year by Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine. This race is something you don’t want to miss out on! Gritty Chix Mud run is for anyone with a gritty spirit, and everyone who’s #1 goal is to have fun in the funky, and dirty Mud course. Captain Thurmond’s Challenge

August 7-8

Captain Thurmond’s Challenge is held in the center of beautiful downtown Fayetteville, West Virginia. It is an extreme triathlon consisting of 28.5 miles of the most extreme Mountain Biking, White Water, and Running in the state and some would say the East Coast. Participants can register to compete as part of Raft Team, a Relay Team, or in the Solo Division.If you’re looking for teammates or are concerned about the White Water leg of this race, we encourage you to contact us and we will be happy to help you assemble a team. This race is part of the New River Gorge Challenge Weekend so pack up the friends and family and head on out for a weekend of racing for every level! In addition to the Captain Thurmond’s Challenge on Saturday, August 7th, 2021, a 5K will also be held in town that morning with proceeds supporting the New River Gorge Learning Co-Op. There is also an awesome FAMILY-FRIENDLY triathlon held Sunday, August 8th in the town of Thurmond, WV, a short drive from Fayetteville.

Fayetteville’s Wild Weekend Nature Festival

We want to invite you to come on an adventure with us and discover all of the nature that Fayetteville has to offer. We are celebrating what makes Fayetteville so wild with a nature festival from August 13th through the 15th. From educational programs designed specifically for youngsters and adults to guided hikes in the New River Gorge along with adventure activities.  Fayetteville’s Wild Weekend will offer a variety of activities and workshops for all ages and interests. Come and celebrate the features, creatures, and culture that make Fayetteville the unique place that it is. Stay tuned for schedule updates as more events are finalized. Enjoy activities from nature paddle boarding tours to salamander talks. We will have a nature market and educational booths set up at the Fayetteville Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Stop by the Fayette County Farmers Market every Saturday conveniently located in the Fayette County Courthouse parking lot off Wiseman Ave from 8am to 12:30pm. Shop for a variety of produce grown locally, fresh eggs, baked goods, meats, and more. There are also a variety of artisans that set up every market with handmade items. The market moves to the Rick Rutledge Pavilion off Virginia Street in Oak Hill on Thursdays from 2pm to 6pm.

In addition to Turnrow pickups and on-farm sales, we will be hosting food trucks featuring local ingredients. Bring a blanket and join us for picnic-style dining. There will be a pop-up market featuring local farmers and artists. You are welcome to bring an instrument if you play for some pickin fun. We will also have activities for the kids.
